Why buy vintage? There are a few reasons why I started buying vintage stuff over the years. First of all, you save money. My student budget often collided with my expensive taste for clothes and all things beautiful. A new leather bag or a designer piece will most likely cost you double the price compared to the vintage version. Loads of materials such as leather become even more beautiful after being worn. It’s a win-win basically!
More importantly, is the sustainability factor behind it. While fast fashion has taken over our wardrobes, people are becoming less aware of the luxury that is clothing. Instead of supporting the fast fashion industry, onlineshops such as Kleiderkreisel or Depop help you to re-sell your old clothes, making sure to expand their lifespan by finding a different home. In the future I will talk more about the process of sustainability in the fashion industry, as well as provide you with alternative shopping options and online shops.
Shop local, think global. Personally, I feel better knowing that my money is not wandering into a big company’s pocket but stays within the community. Either you buy in small vintage shops in your area or check out one of the many charity shops. You can donate old clothes and shop some new stuff, knowing that every little helps. Sometimes you don’t even need to leave the house: one of UK’s biggest charities Oxfam, now offers their own online shop.
How about a swapping party? We all have some beauties hiding in our closet, waiting to be worn again. Even though there are already quite a few swap events around, why not throw a party yourself and invite your favourite people to swap their goodies? As if we needed any more reasons to throw a party duh?!
Finally, shopping vintage can also become a real hobby. The adventure of not looking for anything specific but spotting some of your new favourite pieces can be really exciting. It may take you to new places and areas you’ve never been before. Plus, you can make sure that none of your arch enemies (we all have them) will be wearing the same outfit as you, a very unlikely scenario.
